| Humane Society shopping for animal lovers | | Posted Wednesday, December 13, 2006 1:19:17 PM by Blog57 Team | | Quincy Humane Society representatives will be back in their familiar holiday post Friday through Sunday at the Quincy Mall, hoping to entice shoppers to give an animal a home. The Quincy Humane Society is again involved in "Home 4 the Holidays" international pet adoption drive that runs through Jan. 2. The project is sponsored by Iams dog food and has 2,000 animal shelters nationwide participating. "This has always been a huge success," said Sally Westerhoff, president of the Humane Society Board of Directors. "We always get a lot of foot traffic at the mall because of the holidays, much more than we would normally get at our (3411 S. 12th) site." In recent years, Westerhoff said requests for cats and kittens have outnumbered those for dogs and puppies during the three days at the mall.... | |

| | | Chew On This | | Posted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 3:12:22 AM by Blog57 Team | | It's raining CANDY! During the next couple of days, buckets of candy will be eaten and handed out, and then more candy will be eaten again. On Halloween night some will eat as much candy as they might consume in a year (for some that could be as much as 20 pounds)! Candy is in season year-round, but Halloween has the potential for the most fun and who better to know than Wakarusa Dime Store (103 E. Waterford St., [574] 862-4690, www.jumbojellybeans.com). The home of the world's largest jelly bean, the dime store will be offering a Jumbo Jelly Bean Specialty Mix (black licorice and orange sour tangerine) to honor the season. In addition, this 99-year-old establishment will sell a variety of nostalgic candy, including wax lips and fangs, pumpkin-, witch- and ghost-shaped suckers, mellocreme pumpkins and assorted taffies (pumpkin spice, caramel and candy corn flavors).... | |

"Today, accurately measuring concentration of the compounds of interest in pet foods is only possible by testing 'thief' samples in a laboratory through the use of wet chemical methods or optical spectrometers," Freese said. "The good news now is that, with SpectrInline Processware(TM), pet food manufacturers can have complete process control, at any and all points of manufacturing -- from the introduction of ingredients to final validation." | | | Caring for cats: From kittens with fleas to aging felines Caring ... | | Posted Monday, October 23, 2006 1:07:40 PM by Blog57 Team | | Q. I have a very young kitten that was given to my daughter. He is infested with fleas. What is the safest product to use on him? I am not sure of his age. A. Flea products can be very toxic to young kittens. If you are unsure of his age, the safest way to de-flea his coat is to use a flea comb. It is time-consuming but safe. When he reaches eight weeks old, you can use flea products such as Advantage or Frontline. Rather than guess at his age, I would have him examined by a veterinarian for an age estimate, health check and his first set of vaccinations. Q. I recently found a small stray kitten in downtown Oakland. I have had him in my home for a week now. The kitten has adapted well to my care and eats, drinks and plays regularly. He has even taken to the litter box and uses it on his own....

The company said sales came to 72.2 billion Swiss francs ($57 billion), up from 66.2 billion francs during the year-earlier period. The figure fell just short of analysts' estimates of 72.5 billion francs. "We are still facing volatile raw material and energy prices, but overall, I feel comfortable in reconfirming our reaching the upper end of our long-term organic growth target of between 5 percent and 6 percent," said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Peter Brabeck-Letmathe. Organic growth, or growth in the company without acquisitions, for the January to September period was 6.1 percent. Nestle discloses profit figures only for the half year and full year....

| | | Election 2006: Franklin pushes green values for schools | | Posted Sunday, October 15, 2006 11:08:22 AM by Blog57 Team | | Paul Franklin is the rarest kind of school board member: a trustee with no children who came to the board espousing a philosophy of governance, but without any pet projects. "I didn't come to this job with any heavy dogma or policy goals," Franklin said. "I came from a perspective of the values promoted by the Green Party." Now after four years, Franklin wants to return to continue work on a more focused agenda that includes making schools more physically and emotionally healthy places and attracting more students to the district. "I've spent four years learning a tremendous amount," he said. "I'm running again because I believe I have more to contribute." Franklin first got involved in politics in 2000, spurred by Ralph Nader's campaign for the presidency.... | |

| | | BREAK THE RULES | | Posted Thursday, October 05, 2006 3:11:39 AM by Blog57 Team | | Dieting can be a slippery slope. One wrong rationalization and you are left rolling downhill until you crash into the dessert cart. The logic: It's free When food's up for grabs, you might as well grab some. Freebies are everywhere, from samples at the market to bagels in the morning meeting. But just one sesame bagel with cream cheese will set you back almost 500 calories. And that's not the only reason to refuse it: Research shows that you're likely to perceive free food as less tasty (so you're not even really enjoying it). Plus, you're unlikely to compensate for the additional calories by eating less the rest of the day. In our brains, free food isn't coded as a meal, but as a surprise that we don't need to enter into our daily calorie count. So even if the giveaway grub is mediocre at best, you keep eating, since it's not like you're paying for it not in cash anyway.... | |

| | | Helping your pet live a longer life | | Posted Saturday, September 30, 2006 7:09:45 AM by Blog57 Team | | Many of us were taught the 7:1 ratio: For every year that we live, our pets age seven years. But, this doesn't take into consideration that larger dogs have a faster aging process than smaller dogs and cats live longer than dogs. It's estimated that genetics -- a pet's species, breed, gender, ancestry -- can influence the longevity of a dog or cat by 30-40 percent. Thus, knowing that an Irish Wolfhound probably have a shorter life span than a dachshund might influence your selection of your next pet. Also, environment has an impact on longevity. It's reported that an exclusively indoor cat will live four times longer than an exclusively outdoor cat. Other variables influencing longevity are nutrition, whether the pet receives preventative health care, whether a pet is exposed to diseases and the strength of the human-animal bond (pets that are "members of the family" are less likely to undergo euthanasia than pets that don't enjoy a strong emotion bond with their owners).... | |
