What to feed or not to feed, when it comes to your pets
Posted Thursday, January 26, 2006 9:28:24 PM by Rose Martins

Pet food has been a topic of contempt for many years. People have often fed their pets with table scraps that are not always suitable for the animal. Just because a food is naturally nutricious for a human, does not mean that it is naturally nutricious for your pet. Pet foodPet food is food that should be the healthy choice for your pet. There are many pet food products on the supermarket and pet store shelves.

Companies such as Premium, Wellness, Diamond, Hills and Nutro, all have various pet food products. It's very important to read the pet food labels carefully, to determine which pet food product is best for your pet.

Diamond pet food recently recalled a line of dog food after numerous pet dogs died agonizing deaths after eating contaminated Diamond Pet Food. When is comes to pet food, storage conditions are also important. Dry pet food, such as pellets and buscuits, should be kept in dry conditions, and open tins of pet food should be kept refrigerated and for no more than about a day or two.

Many pet owners suppliment their pet's diet with vitamins and minerals which often come in the form of a tablet. One should not give your pet any medication without first consulting a professional.

That's Mann's her two-and-a-half-pound Chihuahua. When she knits, Pepper curls up beside her, jumps in her lap or rests on her chest with her paws wrapped around her neck. On days when Mann's frail knees allow her to get the mail, Pepper sits on top of Mann's walker as she slowly makes her way down the driveway. Mann is one of 400 clients of Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County who receive free pet food with their own daily meals. The Fort Worth chapter has been providing cat and dog food for the past five years, after volunteers saw an increasing number of clients feeding pets from their own plates. This holiday season, after noticing that the problem was widespread, Meals On Wheels Association of America and Banfield, The Pet Hospital have teamed up to provide pet food for needy seniors nationwide....

Meals on Wheels -- the national program that brings food to hundreds of thousands of seniors every week -- did a little research recently and found: It has a problem. A good portion of the food it serves up every day, ends up being scarfed by Fido, Snookums or Bowser! As Kristian Foden-Vencil reports, a large Portland company is hoping to come to the rescue with a national Pet Food Drive launched Wednesday. ----------- At a small senior living center across from the McDonalds in North Plains, 71-year-old Eldora Fitzgerald watches TV with her 8-year-old Dachshund -- Pongo. (Sound of knocking on door.) (Sound of dog barking.) Kristian Foden-Vencil: "Hi Eldora. How are you doing? Hey Pongo, you want to check me out?" Eldora Fitzgerald: "He's spoiled rotten." Kristian Foden-Vencil: "Oh yeah." Fitzgerald was born and raised down the road in Beaverton and spent most of her life as a home maker....

BLOOMINGTON, Minn., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Charity food donations at one Bloomington, Minn., grocery are literally going to the dogs -- and cats and other critters. The Festival Foods store, partnering with an area humane society, has opened what is believed to be the Twin Cities area's first food shelf for homeless pets, the (St. Paul, Minn.) Pioneer Press said Saturday. Customers buy $5 bags of store-selected animal products and drop them off on-site, the newspaper said. Since the program began Wednesday, customers purchased about 100 bags -- almost twice the donations for the store's food shelf for people, said Tom Clasen, operations director for the Vadnais Heights, Minn.-based Knowlan's Super Markets, which owns Festival Foods. Clasen said he didn't know how the pet food shelf would be received, adding that he was concerned that some shoppers might view the idea as putting animals ahead of people, the Pioneer Press said....

Treating Your Pet with Meds Requires Trust in Source

In my last two columns on pain control in pets, the focus was primarily on degenerative joint disease - i.e. arthritis - as well as how weight control can improve the length and quality of your pet's life. This time I want to address some of the specific diets, supplements and medications you can use for these purposes - specifically, over-the-counter medications and ethical supplements. "Over-the-counter" means the medications are sold at various retail outlets such as pet stores, health food stores, pharmacies and grocery stores. "Ethical products" are generally those sold in more controlled environments such as your veterinarian's hospital, where someone is actually looking at the quality of the products and helping you screen out those that may be ineffective....

Dog owners who make sure their pets eat right and exercise may be unknowingly feeding their pets ground animal parts, including crushed bird beaks and brains, and possibly making them sick, according to a Local 6 News investigation. The report said that the government agency that oversees pet food sold to the public -- the Food and Drug Administration -- said it is perfectly legal to include animal parts in pets' diets. "It could be anything from heads, feet, intestines and undigested eggs," veterinary nutritionist Dr. Edward Moser said. ....

Kittylitter: My friend in the country has about five barn cats that run free in the wood and fields. I'm concerned about these animals suffering from things like fleas. Do cats suffer as much from flea, ticks and mites like dogs do? What should be done to protect them? Linda Wilson Fuoco: Barn cats are generally hardier than house cats and house dogs. There are flea and tick preventatives for cats. Some barn cats are "tamer" or more domesticated than others. Often you can't get them in a carrier and a car to get them to a vet. If this barn has horses or cows, the large-animal veterinarian who makes house calls (or would that be barn calls?) can tend to the cats -- if the cats can be caught and handled. Ear mites can be very annoying and painful. Some cats and some dogs are visibly "bugged" by fleas and ticks -- they act itchy and twitchy....

SEATTLE - The operators of the Animal Talk pet store and shelter say cats have been traumatized by burglars who ripped open cages, kicked the cats and stomped gerbils and mice to death. The thieves took about a dozen lizards, a python and iguana, as well as dog food and a digital camera. Owner Missy Young says the losses and damage total about $5,000. Officers on patrol discovered the break-in early Saturday, and when Young arrived, she found a frenzy of 50 cats and 25 hamsters, gerbils and mice. 10/9/2006 Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
