Dana Flint wanted her Kerry blue terrier to have a fast name, so she decided to call him "Apollo." The name was inspired by Flint's love of Olympic short track speed skating champion Apolo Anton Ohno."It's fast and it's the top of the game and he's a big-time winner," Flint said of her energetic, gray-blue canine companion. The name seems to fit, Ch. Harmony's Flint of Fire, a.k.a Apollo, who will strut his stuff at the prestigious invitation-only AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Dec. 2-3 at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center in Long Beach, Calif.Flint began showing Apollo when he was just 6 months old. At 10 months, Apollo started winning shows. Today, at the age of 3, he is considered one of the top 25 Kerry blue terriers in the country. He is the only dog Flint has ever shown."This dog has done amazing things," she said....

Shelby County: spay and neuter your pets

Ever since I began working at the paper, I have always struggled with coming up with subject matter for my columns. Sure I could talk about myself or my husband, or stories I didn't have time to get to throughout the week, but I never felt a really strong opinion about a certain subject. When I looked at Shelby County and the many problems or situations we deal with on a regular basis, they didn't fire me up. We have problems like every other county, or so I thought. Traffic, overcrowding in schools, politicians that let us down - why get upset about something, I think to myself. We are working toward fixing the situation, and people we elect and should trust will lead us towards new solutions. I have been very complacent, not stepping on anyone's toes in offering my opinions. No longer. My stomach churns as I write this, because I am so furious at the way Shelby County handles domestic animals....

North Ridgeville -- Doggy dentists? Kitty chiropractors? Animal acupuncturists? More veterinarians are expanding their clinics to provide these services to help pets live longer. That includes Animal Clinic Northview veterinarian Robert Hutchison. The canine reproduction expert, who also treats small animals such as birds, rodents and reptiles, has broken ground on a 22,000-square-foot clinic, scheduled to open in the spring. The facility is one of the first in the area to offer enhanced pet care, including breeding, orthopedics, dental and physical rehabilitation. Specialized clinics have become popular because pets, like people, are living longer, said Richard Bednarski, director of the veterinary teaching hospital at Ohio State University....

Book hopes to curb animal abuse

ANOTHER pet was abandoned by its owner and has to be put to sleep. The female German Shepherd left in a vacant house was very sick when found. Taking its life was the humane thing to do as it meant an end to its suffering. They are used for continuous breeding without receiving proper nutrition, while many are chained until sores developed on the neck, which are later infested with maggots. Many are confined in small, rusty cages where they can hardly move.Animal cruelty is rampant. And the heaviest punishment for these people is, at most, a RM200 fine. This has greatly saddened animal lover Angeline Chin, who said continuous education is vital to prevent animals - cats and dogs in particular - from being treated cruelly. The communications manager with a land investment company has spent two years working on her book, Silent Cries, to promote animal rights awareness and responsible pet ownership....

"Nacho Libre"** 1/2 This is not the best effort from Jack Black or director Jared Hess. There seemed to be a great breeding line for this wacky farce, with "Napoleon Dynamite" writer and director Hess teaming with his partner/wife Jerusha, "School of Rock" writer Mike White and the unstoppable Black. But the Hess technique doesn't translate so well from Idaho to Mexico, and the long, slow pauses between jokes tie this wrestling movie into knots. Black plays a Mexican priest who dons a mask and wrestles anonymously to raise money for his orphanage. |PG|91 minutes|Released today |Michael Booth "Monster House"** Something untoward is taking place at the house across the street from 12-year-old DJ (Mitchel Musso). Mr. Nebbercracker and his fixer-upper seem to be gobbling kids' toys with greater frequency as Halloween approaches....

She is charged with upholding the law regarding animals, but the tables have turned on a San Mateo County animal control officer who is being investigated for allegedly breeding dogs and keeping goats and horses on her property without the necessary permits. On Tuesday morning, Colma police went to the Mission Road home of Debi DeNardi, a Peninsula Humane Society investigator, after getting a complaint that she illegally runs a backyard-breeding operation, according to Police Cmdr. Greg Hart. "You can only get the permit if you have the right space, and if the land is zoned for that," he said. City Planner Andrea Ouse said a nonprofit group can be granted a permit by the City Council to keep livestock such as goats and horses, but otherwise, the animals are prohibited in Colma....

Train your dog with love, rewards and consistency - never a stick. Dog training is a growing business as more people find time for man's best friend. Shanghai Circus World can help, but dogs must be licensed to enter the school, writes Xu Wei. Yan Guohao, a middle-aged pet lover, didn't expect that his naughty Alaskan malamute Lucy could have so much fun during her days at the Dog Training Center of the Shanghai Circus World. In August, five-month-old Lucy was sent to the center to improve her obedience, manners, concentration, agility and other basic skills for her long-time relationship with humans. "On my trips to some Western countries, I was surprised to see many big canines behave themselves so well," says Yan. "That inspired me to give Lucy a decent education. The training center interests me because of its rigorous selection process and strong faculty." After a physical examination and "interviews" to test her intelligence, reactions and personality, Lucy was enrolled in an elementary 40-day curriculum....

The birth of a Malayan sun bear at Wellington Zoo three weeks ago proves that an unusual operation on the Zoo's male sun bear, Sean, has been successful, General Manager, Operations, Mauritz Basson announced today. 'Sun bear cubs are extremely fragile and notoriously difficult to breed. We are cautiously optimistic that the cub, who is just three weeks old, will survive. At present we are the only zoo in Australasia that has successfully bred sun bears so this cub is very exciting news for us and for the region," Mauritz said. 'The cub is in the den with Chomel, our female sun bear, and won't be on display to visitors for about another two to three months, fingers crossed that everything goes well. We are doing everything we can to ensure the cub's survival but we have to remain hands off.' 'A few months ago, Sean's keepers noticed that he was having problems urinating and mating....

Sweet job | Cat groomer

Danelle German learned to groom cats through breeding and showing Persians and she saw a need for knowledgeable cat grooming in a place where cats are isolated from dogs - not because she doesn't like dogs, but because they put cats on the defensive. As one might imagine, there's a technique to grooming and bathing cats. "They have to be handled in a way that cats respond to," German says. "It's very, very different from handling dogs. You cannot make a cat be submissive." OK, but don't cats groom themselves? That's true, she says, but it's not effective. They can't get all the dirt and oil out, they wind up with hairballs and sometimes they develop allergies that cause skin problems. When she grooms a cat, the first thing she does is trim its claws, as would any sane person....
