Jandj Art proved he could compete with some of harness racing's best three-year-old pacers when he finished second to Shark Gesture in a Bluegrass division in September at Lexington's Red Mile. Whether he can duplicate the effort from post seven in Friday's $250,000 Windy City Pace at Chicago's Maywood Park remains to be seen. Jeremes Jet, My Boy David and Bono Bests were made the top choices in the morning line for Maywood's showcase event. Also on Friday's card are the $105,000 Abe Lincoln, the $100,000 Galt Memorial and the $100,000 Cinderella. The winner of five lifetime races and $90,409, Jandj Art is trained by Joe Seekman for YA Post LLC, a partnership of breeder Yousif Yousif and Ameer Najor. "He's a very good horse," Yousif said. "He's got speed. The problem is he's not gelded....

Horse owners angered by House plan to change slots law

HARRISBURG -- For two years now, horse breeders, owners, trainers and jockeys have been counting on seven new racetrack/casinos to generate additional money to rejuvenate the state's horse-breeding and agricultural industries. But some of that financial aid is being threatened by a surprise change that the state House wants to make to the 2004 slots law, equine industry officials said yesterday. The Gaming Control Board has licensed five racetrack/casinos, and a sixth "racino'' license is earmarked for a new track being built in Erie. Three of the facilities have harness racing and three others have thoroughbred racing. As things now stand, the seventh and final racetrack/slots license would go to a fourth harness track, yet to be built, in Western Pennsylvania. But the House voted this week to make it easier to convert that last license into a license for a stand-alone, or non-track casino, which could be built anywhere in the state....

Heart of the matter When a horse develops heart problems, poor performance usually is the first tip-off

THE DEATH of Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) winner Electrocutionist from a suspected heart attack stunned his connections and the racing world. The five-year-old Red Ransom horse was one of the most accomplished racehorses in the Godolphin Racing stable. In three seasons and 12 starts, the winner of Group 1 races in three countries was never off the board. He won eight times, was second three times, and third once. In what was to be his final start six weeks earlier on July 29, Electrocutionist mounted a late challenge against eventual winner Hurricane Run in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Eng-G1) at Ascot and finished second by a half-length. Typically, when a horse is suffering from a heart ailment, a decrease in performance is the first sign. But with his racing career in high gear, the only complaint about Electrocutionist's performance leading up to that race came from the British racing press, which alleged the horse had been exhibiting stiffness in morning training....

In its second year, the Baileys Horse Feeds/British Breeding Futurity scheme saw 200 horses enrolled in the regional qualifiers and 100 qualify for the finals at Arena UK, that they may be produced with care for long term competitive careers and also to reward owners and breeders for their considered breeding decisions. The Futurity underpins the development of the sport horse industry in the UK, supporting the requirements of the Strategy for the Horse Industry and populating the forthcoming National Equine Database (NED) with valuable breeding and performance data, the highest overall scores for each horse being recorded on NED. "We are very pleased to have the highly proactive support of Baileys Horse Feeds in this integral part of the development of long-called-for industry initiatives....

A horse boarding at a Swansea farm has died of mosquito-born disease that has had citizens and public health officials concerned for some time now. Swansea Health Agent Joe Carvalho said he learned of the horse's death on the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 3, from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The cause of death was determined to be Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a severe viral illness transmitted by mosquitoes that has affected humans and horses. The horse had been brought from Florida to its last home in Swansea on Sept. 18, and became ill shortly thereafter. Owned by a woman from Providence, the horse was boarding at Stoney Creek Farm, under the care of Erin Babbitt. Both Mr. Carvalho and Ms. Babbitt said it was unclear where the horse was when it became infected....

KIRKLAND: 'The horse is here to stay!'

"The automobile may be planning to take the country, but they will never succeed in replacing the horse. We have some good horse flesh around the county. He is here to stay." Such was the opinion of Lufkinites back in early October 1914, as reported by columnist Lynda Cheavens in The Lufkin Advertiser dated Oct. 4, 1984. During the first week in that long ago October, as Lynda related from early accounts, the rains were beginning to fall and streets in downtown Lufkin were covered with mud and ruts caused by automobiles attempting to drive through it. (No wonder the horse could never be replaced.) Consequently, local residents were starting a fund to see if a crossing could be put down from Peavy Brothers Store over to the Lufkin National Bank just across the street, reason being that everyone in town wanted to go by the bank to get a look at the new wood-burning stove just installed....

After earning ribbons all summer at local horse shows, Kelly Campbell, 15, of Wales Township was looking forward to sharing her knack for winning with the Port Huron High School Equestrian Team. While that still might happen, it will be on two borrowed horses, not on Snickers, the horse Kelly owned and spent years training to be a winner. Snickers and 17 other horses died in a Sept. 9 arson at a Classic Quarter Horses barn in Clyde Township. ....

After over a quarter of a century in banking and on the threshold of climbing further up the administrative ladder with the National Bank, Bob Marchment, who died last week at the age of 62, threw it all away to follow loves of breeding and racing and also books into establishing a business in Sydney in the early 1980s which has been a big asset for all horse enthusiasts. Located first in the Randwick shopping centre and then moved to Anzac Parade, Kensington, it is the Horseman's Bookshop and Gallery and it is home for thousands of books, not only related to the thoroughbred but all breeds of horses. Bob had an encyclopedic memory when it came to what books were available and was continually buying new and old publications. His collections also included old Australian racebooks, sporting calendars, punting books, paintings and cigarette cards....
