Exotic pets are a costly investment

Exotic pets need to cared for carefully. Without the proper care, exotic pets kept in captivity can quickly deteriorate and often die. Before making a purchase of an exotic animal, you should research the animal carefully. Exotic pets

You should learn the behavioural characteristics of the exotic animal, as well as eating habits and environmental needs.

Also, some exotic animals that are kept in captivity, need special diet supplements to give them the nourishment that they lack when not living in the wild.

Your neighbourhood veternarian should be knowledgable in the care of exotic animals, and can usually treat an exotic animal for illnesses. How does one go about making a purchase of an exotic animal? Many pet shops sell exotic animals - snakes, iguanas, tortoises, turtles, monkeys, frogs and lizards, just to name a few.

Buying an exotic animal from a reputable pet store, is probably your best option. The pet store staff should be able to advise you regarding the care of the exotic animal, and you have where to turn if you encounter problems.

I would think twice before buying an exotic pet from a street vendor or shady source. You never know the history of the exotic animal and what diseases it might be harbouring. There are many online catalogues that offer exotic pet food and accessories for sale.

Most of these catalogues are online branches of well known pet stores. Not only do they offer food and other relevant exotic pet items for sale, but they give advice on the care of your exotic pet.

Wild animals best left to live in wild

The Humane Society of the United States points out that incidents like last week's monkey attack of its owner in Butler County is yet another reason why most wild animals do not make good pets. "Keeping monkeys and other primates as pets threatens public health and safety as well as animal welfare," said Beth Preiss, director of the Exotic Pets Campaign for the Humane Society of the United States. "People get pet primates when (the animals) are small and then can no longer care for them when they grow larger and more aggressive. These social, intelligent animals are often confined to small cages or passed from owner to owner." ....

It also has an unlikely name - the Mexican red rump tarantula, one of many exotic species purchased as pets then set free by their owners. "Florida and California are the two worst states with imported exotics," said G.B. Edwards, the entomologist with Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. "The main centers are Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Fort Myers." The department hopes to drive home the problem by using Frida, a nonnative Mexican red rump tarantula, as the star of a new public service announcement now online. The PSA video targets exotic pet owners who release their animals into the wild after the excitement wears off. The problem? The newcomers can endanger native species by eating their food or attacking them....

Animal Lovers Need Permits for Exotic Pets

Our first Red Phone caller of the week, a local resident with a passion for exotic animals, asked the Crimson Crusader if keeping a large alligator in her Hollister home would violate any local or state laws. The Crimson Crusader made a quick call to San Benito County District Attorney John Sarsfield to find out. The prosecutor said owning such a pet would clearly violate Section 2118 of the California Fish and Game Code. The section reads, "It is unlawful to import, transport, possess, or release alive into this state, except under a revocable, nontransferable permit as provided in this chapter and the regulations pertaining thereto, any wild animal of the following species." And, dear caller, if you guessed alligators, along with aardvarks, zebras and hippos, were on that list of animals that require permits, you'd be right....

Ulster is tamed with new pet laws

Long-awaited legislation on the keeping of dangerous wild animals is due to take effect in Northern Ireland next month, Government officials have revealed. The move will finally bring the province into line with a law passed three decades ago for other parts of the UK. The 30-year-old loophole meant that a licence has been needed to keep a dog but not more dangerous and exotic creatures. Animal welfare charity, the USPCA, has welcomed the forthcoming change as "long overdue". It has repeatedly had to deal with the fall-out from the anomaly. In the past 12 months alone, the organisation has seized a consignment of baby crocodiles, snakes and other reptiles in Newry and a tamarin monkey from a house in Craigavon. There have also been a number of cases over the years of big cats and wolves being kept as pets....

Fishing boy lands piranha

A 14-YEAR-OLD boy fishing at his local pond in England has landed a man-eating piranha, an exotic native of tropical South America. Josh Boyle hooked the deadly fish from the water in Reddish Vale, Stockport, Greater Manchester. A keen angler, Josh realised it was a piranha and held its sharp teeth at arm's length in a towel. The schoolboy even had the presence of mind to take a snap of the fish on his mobile phone to prove to his friends and family he was not telling fishy tales. "It was easy to get it back on to the bank because I had the net," he said. "Then I went over to my mate and said 'It's a piranha' and he didn't believe me. "Then he had a closer look and admitted it was. My brother used to keep piranhas as pets so I know what they look like." "I was shocked - but it was as shocked as me....

Pet store manager charged with willful burning of shop

CAMBRIDGE -- The manager of a pet store destroyed in a blaze last month was charged yesterday with setting fire to the shop and killing more than two-dozen exotic pets in an arson in which he sought to frame animal rights activists. The fire on the second floor of the Boston Tropical Fish and Reptiles shop on Sept. 27 killed a collection of snakes, frogs, and fish, with the apparent arsonist spray painting ``No more exploitation of animals" on the storefront. Detectives at the scene said the graffito might lead them to the culprit. Yesterday, police arrested Thanh Trinh , 42, of Charlestown, the store's manager, along with two alleged accomplices. Trinh pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges of willful burning of a building, malicious killing of animals, cruelty to animals, larceny over $250, and larceny from a building....
