A black firefighter will be paid $2.7 million to settle claims he suffered racial harassment and discrimination after fellow firefighters served him spaghetti laced with dog food. The award, approved 11-1 by the City Council on Wednesday, was the latest in a string of settlements of lawsuits alleging harassment, discrimination and hostility within the Fire Department. Firefighter Tennie Pierce, 51, said in his suit that Firefighter Jorge Arevalo mixed canned dog food purchased by Capt. John Tohill into Pierce's dinner at their station two years ago, and another captain, Chris Burton, knew about the trick but didn't say anything. Pierce ''took a large bite, at which time he noticed the other firefighters were laughing and making noises,'' the lawsuit said....

Field and Forest Facts: A dog called Coyote
Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 11:18:09 AM by Blog57 Team
Coyotes, which occasionally crossbreed with domestic dogs, becoming "coydogs," have been known from ancient times and abound in Native American tales where "Coyote" is cast as a philosopher, a mischievous clown, or an evil trickster whose adventures include stealing food from honest folks. The Aztecs called them coyotl, meaning "holes" (where they spend the first part of their lives), and whether you call them KI-oats (KAH-oats in East Texan) or ki-OH-tees, we certainly have plenty of them in Deep East Texas, where estimates run as high as 15,000! Pick almost any night, particularly if there's a full moon, drive out in the country a short distance, stop, roll down the windows and listen. It won't take long before Canis latrans, or "barking dog" will start serenading you. Barking, yipping, howling, wailing and yodeling in chorus, a few can sound like dozens as they vary their voices almost like a ventriloquist....

Readington rejects police request for bomb-sniffing dog
Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 7:39:59 AM by Blog57 Team
Readington Township officials have denied a second request by the Police Department to accept a $45,000 federal grant to fund a bomb-sniffing dog. The decision was made in closed session and wasn't discussed publicly, but might be considered again Monday at the urging of Chief James Paganessi. Hunterdon is the only county in the state without a bomb-sniffing dog, so departments generally call Somerset County or State Police when bomb threats occur, says Lt. Sebastian Donaruma. He says the Homeland Security grant, combined with donations of veterinarian services and food, would ensure that local tax dollars wouldn't be used. "It would be an asset for two reasons," he said. "First, for the explosion detection end, and, to cross-train for patrol and tracking purposes." He said bomb-sniffing dogs are needed each year for the balloon festival at Solberg Airport, and were used in several bomb threats at township schools in recent years....

Do You Know What Goes Into Your Dog's Food?

You care about your pet's health and well-being, but you may not know the whole story when it comes to what you're feeding your cat or dog. Federal guidelines allow for disturbing ingredients in dog and cat food. How can you be sure you're doing the right thing for your pet? Most importantly, watch out for byproducts. Vets say consumers should look for wholesome, natural ingredients when choosing a pet food and should avoid by-products, synthetic chemicals, unnecessary additives and colorings. One alternative is all-natural pet food. Natural pet foods like the Wellness Brand go well beyond government dictated standards -- avoiding byproducts -- and instead focus on natural ingredients such as real meat, high quality grains and botanical extracts. The pet care industry is taking off in Egypt, but local producers ...

Egypt's pampered pets are high-class customers: Expensive imported products currently dominate the pet-care industry here, but local companies are squeezing their way into this growing market. Egyptian producers of pet food and accessories have a price advantage, but are still struggling to lure A-class consumers away from the brands they know. And while government restrictions on pet-food imports are giving a boost to local players, pet lovers and veterinarians are less than impressed with what they are offering their precious pets. The emergence of a defined pet-care market in Egypt began roughly 10 to 15 years ago, when retailers began carrying small supplies of pet food and veterinarians started opening clinics in wealthy areas such as Maadi and Heliopolis. The UK-based market research firm Datamonitor expects the pet-care industry in Egypt to grow 104.8% between 2000 and 2010, with a controlled annual growth rate of 7.4%....

VALLEJO -- The Vallejo woman who was mauled by her pit bull on Tuesday claimed she was attacked after she fed her other dog a treat, an animal control official said Friday. David Sidie, the Benicia Vallejo Humane Society's animal services director, said 21-year-old Rebecca Mantione has agreed to have the unaltered, male pit bull Niko euthanized after the 10-day quarantine expires on Oct. 13. Mantione suffered bites on her arms and legs when Niko attacked her at her home on Chenin Blanc Place Tuesday morning. She remains in fair condition at the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. The Vallejo Fire Department reported she lost a considerable amount of blood. Sidie said Mantione told him she fed her smaller dog, a terrier mix, a treat and the dogs began fighting....
