After at least three days trapped in a tree with no food or water, a stray cat in the Town Estates section of the township was rescued yesterday thanks to the efforts of a couple of cat lovers. The animal, likely a lost pet, was clean and relatively healthy when J.B. Mack shinnied about 50 feet up an ash tree to retrieve him. Mack, a tree climber with Moorestown-based landscaper Wayne R. Miller Co., said the job was easier than he expected. He was ready to come down, Mack said. Vincent and Karen Guarino were jogging Monday when they first noticed the cat trapped in a tree high above a wooded area at 19th Street and Wall Avenue. Since then, they said, others in the neighborhood had made a number of unsuccessful attempts to lure the yowling tabby down....

Steve Burk wants to call his "dog." So he starts growling, barking, and grunting. "SASHA!" he shouts, clapping his hands. "RRrrrrrrr! GRRRRRRRR!" Sasha saunters around the corner. At 75 pounds, two-year old Sasha isn't quite full-grown. He's no ordinary dog: Even as an adolescent, Sasha is incredibly strong. He can leap 10 feet in an effortless glide. He can run up to 50 mph. Actually he's not a dog at all, except in Burk's eyes: This is genus felis, not canis. Sasha is a Russian lynx living in Southwest Ranches. Sasha sweeps nervously from room to room in Steve and Barbara Burk's home. He never really closes his mouth all the better to see his formidable teeth, including two intimidating fangs. With a bobcat's half-tail, a leopard's spots, a lion's mane, and cold, impassive blue eyes, he looks sleek, beautiful, immensely dangerous....

There are powerful emotions attached to cuddly canines and furry felines. The way a dog chases its tail or how a cat purrs when it is happy just seems to brighten even the worst of days. But there are some of those cute animals that do not have an owner to love. And some of those animals wind up at the pound just waiting for the lucky day when they can have a family. ....

The guys nicknamed the cat Dirtbag - a mangy, emaciated black alley cat who snuck in the back door of Chandler Lodge in North Hollywood a few months ago looking for scraps of food. Dirtbag took one look around, liked what he saw and decided to stay. "He was unwanted, unloved and homeless, living on the streets just like, well, just like a feral cat - or a feral person," Jim Whittaker says. Whittaker is one of 36 men living at Chandler Lodge - three separate sober-living houses that have been helping alcohol and drug abusers straighten out their lives since the facility opened in 1960. The men pay $150 a week room and board, hold jobs during the day, then come home to lean on each other and attend nightly 12-step recovery meetings. They all know a little something about dirtbags, Whittaker says....

DELAND -- Kristy Grant won't get a second hearing before the Volusia County Council, but she might get a day in court for her cat sanctuary. County Council members unanimously refused Thursday to give Grant a new hearing on her request to continue operating the Cat Tail Corner cat sanctuary on Buckles Road near Pierson. "It's my opinion the council did not misconstrue the law (in August when the council voted to shut down the facility)," Councilman Dwight Lewis said. Councilman Bill Long said Grant could challenge the county's position in court. Eric Latinsky, an attorney representing Grant, said county standards for an animal sanctuary are not clear and Grant did not understand what she needed to do in August to get county approval, he said. "It's not impossible to fence cats; it just hasn't been done yet," he said....

A cat-astrophe was averted Monday when Evgeny Plushenko, a "Best in Show" Russian Blue cat from Long Island, was found unhurt a day after he escaped from a competition at Madison Square Garden. "There was a whole lot of noise and commotion on Sunday during the show," said Richard Gentles of the city's Animal Care and Control. "We knew our chances of recovering the cat would get a lot better once it got quiet." ....

Wet or dry food? Answers to this and other cat questions

Talking with Don Long, veterinarian and owner of Reno Hospital for Cats, the first thing I wanted to know was this: How often is too often regarding my cat throwing up. He said that up to four times a month -- be it vomit or hair ball -- is normal. The actual act of urping is not a problem in itself but could be a symptom of something more serious. He'll want to know whether there's been a change in food or environment. In my case, it turns out my cat Boo Vincent loves to nibble on our Dracaena marginata houseplant. Once I moved it out of reach, she was back to a healthy two hair balls a month. I've tried giving hair-ball paste to her, but she runs the other direction when I get out the tube. Long gave a good suggestion. Instead of trying to put a blob of paste in the cat's mouth, put it on the fur so the cat will lick it off....

At 27, he's the oldest moggy around
Posted Saturday, October 07, 2006 3:06:45 AM by Blog57 Team
COULD this moulting moggy, named after a lover of Joan Collins who played cricket in East Herts, be the oldest cat in the county? Bungalow Bill is at least 27 years old, according to his latest owners, John and Joan Pavey, of New Hole Farm, Wareside. Although they are not entirely sure if their beloved pet is male or female, they decided to named it after Bill Wiggins — a property developer famed for his relationship with TV and film star Joan Collins. Mr Wiggins, dubbed 'Bungalow Bill' by the tabloid newspapers, was part of the Widford cricket team captained by Julian Pawle in the 1980s. The feline Bill was a stray picked up by John's aunt, Dorothy, in 1980. He was fully grown at the time, which means he could be older than 27. She kept him for 15 years until she passed away and bequeathed him to John's mum, Ruby, who looked after him before she died four years ago....
