Burundi is just a mere 7,599 miles away

In an unusual way, members of the Catholic Community of St. Jude are preparing for Easter. And, with Fr. Dwight's OK, they're including their pets. Last year during Lent more than 400 participants (pets and people) walked 26,697 miles, the equivalent of two round trips to Jerusalem! This year's goal is 7,599 miles, the distance to Burundi! Why Burundi? It is there that the parish is helping to build an orphanage. The walk reminds us of this mission. As an added bonus, by journey's end participants, pets and parishioners will be healthier. While on the journey to Burundi, if you walk with your dog, gaze at your parakeet flying and jumping from perch to perch, watch your fish cruise through the plants in their aquarium, listen to your hamster turn his wheel, or chase kitty from room to room, don't hesitate to include their mileage! Yes, it's true, the miles our furry, feathery, and scaly friends travel (even those that result from slithering by snakes) count! Do your best to approximate the distance they trek, swim or fly....

The World in Brief

Iraqs first democratically elected prime minister said this week that he warned U.S. officials two years ago that Shiite Muslim militias were infiltrating the countrys security services and that they would become entrenched in Iraqi society if they werent stopped. But with deep remorse the friends did not help us, said Ibrahim al-Jaafari, who became Iraqs prime minister after elections on Jan. 30, 2005. America didnt help us. Al-Jaafaris recollection of his meetings with U.S. officials during his tenure as prime minister raises more questions about the Bush administrations assertion that Iraqs sectarian violence can be traced to the Feb. 22, 2006, bombing of a Shiite shrine in Samarra. President Bush, in announcing on Jan. 10 that he was ordering 21,500 additional American troops to Iraq, said that events in the country had been proceeding smoothly in 2005 and that it was only after the Samarra bombing that Shiites began targeting Sunnis in revenge attacks....

EUROPE: Food safety authority puts forward proposals to fight disease transmitted from animals to humans. The European Food Safety Authority is to put forward proposals to fight infectious diseases being transmitted from animals to humans. The move follows the publication of EFSA's first annual report on infectious diseases transmissible from animals to humans (zoonoses) which affect over 380,000 EU citizens per year. The preventative initiatives are based on the report and follow requests from the council of ministers. For the first time, they set out a series of scientific conclusions and recommendations and risk communications proposals to prevent and reduce zoonotic diseases in the EU. EFSA has also identified aspects of the zoonoses reporting system that should be improved....

"What we've been told by the health department of Alabama they are a rabies contamination and als the sand boxes, they are using the restroom. its a hazard to play in the sand box," says Hartselle resident Michelle Kelso. Kelso, who is trying to find the felines a new place to live, says the cats she's adopted out so far are healthy. "We haven't had any of the cats test for any cat transmitted diseases like lukemia or feline aids," says Kelso. Becky DeMike rescued this fluffy tabby known as Rusty from the Hartselle park six years ago. "The park cats make very good pets. Some are a little feral, wild, with in a few weeks if you contain them and are patient they make good pets too," says Hartselle resident Becky DeMike. The city granted an extension and delayed plans to remove the cats....

Feline virus warning comes too late

An outbreak of a feline virus at the Porter County Animal Shelter has led to heartache for some who adopted pets and caused the shelter to euthanize its remaining cats and to close its cat room for a period. The virus, panleukopenia, is similar to parvo disease in canines. Shelter director Sandy Ogle said she feels awful about what happened."We called most of the people who adopted the cats," Ogle said. "We advised people during the two weeks before we closed the cat room."The decision was made by veterinarian Mary Ann Sheller, member of the Porter County Animal Welfare Board, to euthanize the remaining cats and close the cat room Oct. 3.On Monday, the Porter County Animal Shelter reopened its cat room, and cats are available for adoption. The room is cleaned and disinfected daily to deter another outbreak of the virus.Melissa Buher's said two kittens adopted by her family in September died from the virus, and she feels one of those deaths could have been prevented if she knew earlier about the outbreak. The Crown Point resident adopted a 7-week-old kitten, Mya, from the shelter Sept....

Unfortunately, the high costs of the best pet health care may be daunting, even for those who consider their pets indispensable members of the family. Pet health insurance is a simple, affordable solution for those who love their pets but are concerned about the financial hardship of high-quality pet care. The state House District 87 race pits Republican incumbent Adam Hasner against a political novice, Ed Kopf, who has served as a Palm Beach County schoolteacher for almost as long as Hasner's been alive. Hasner, 36, has perfect side-swept hair, a radiant smile, immaculate suits and a snazzy Web site that shows off recent wedding pictures. Golf is one of his hobbies. ....

Vet: Cats should be kept inside
Posted Tuesday, October 17, 2006 7:07:17 AM by Blog57 Team
Here are some more cat care tips from my conversation with Don Long, who is a veterinarian and owner of the Reno Hospital for Cats. I asked whether cats should be kept inside. "Very definitely" was his response. He mentioned feline leukemia, feline AIDS and feline infectious peritonitis. The main methods of transmission for all those diseases are through sex or fighting, activities that cats generally encounter only outside. Then he mentioned other mortal foes of cats: automobiles and, here in the desert, coyotes and bobcats. Although Long didn't mention it, many animal lovers also recommend that cats be kept inside because of their devastating effect on wild birds. One tip he had for letting the cat enjoy the outdoors, though, is to buy some 6-foot by 8-foot chain-link panels, which are available at many home-building supply stores....

Mello '82 wins Nobel for medicine

Craig Mello '82 felt "total disbelief" as he stood in his bedroom before dawn the morning of Oct. 2. At 4:40 a.m., a man with "a very dignified accent" had called to tell the former biochemistry concentrator he'd won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Medicine. "I just couldn't believe it," Mello, who is 45, told The Herald. "My first words were, 'you've got to be kidding.'" In December Mello and fellow researcher Andrew Fire will be awarded science's top international honor - and will share the accompanying $1.37 million cash prize - for discovering a process that researchers might use to cure cancer and other diseases. The so-called "RNA interference" technique enables scientists to perform "gene silencing," which allows researchers to test what every gene in the human body does, and, potentially, pinpoint which genes make people sick....
