People looking for longevity should start looking at the nearest animal shelter. According to numerous studies dating back more than a century, interaction with animals has a beneficial effect on human health. The Centers for Disease Control reports that pets can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels, as well as alleviating feelings of loneliness and the depression that can result. Not only does interaction with pets decrease stress and related cardiovascular illnesses, but caring for a pet has practical everyday benefits. Having a dog, for example, increases the likelihood of regular outdoor exercise. Daily walking is a known benefit for cardiovascular fitness, and having a dog to walk increases opportunity not only for exercise but for socialization....

It has been four years since Cheri Christian and her children gathered around their beloved dog Midnight and said goodbye, but the moment haunts her still. Veterinarians could have saved Midnight, a black Labrador retriever mix who was seriously hurt after he jumped, tethered, from the back of a pickup truck. Christian simply couldn't afford $2,000 in medical and surgical bills. ....

ALTOONA -- Those concerned about their health waste no time getting health insurance for themselves and their families. But how about for a family's favorite pooch? For a number of years, insurance companies have been sprouting up not to insure humans, but to offer health coverage for pets. "It's something people should look into, especially with multiple pets," said Dr. Matthew Stachmus, a veterinarian at Pleasant Valley Animal Hospital in Altoona. "In the past 10 to 20 or even five years, the ability of veterinarians and the things were taught, you can really almost do anything on a pet you can do on a human if you can afford it. "Veterinary care has gotten expensive, but peoples expectations have also gotten higher. Like anything, it will become more commonplace, especially with rising costs." Just for general care during a year, pet owners can expect to spend almost $300, said Suzanne S....

Hunt: Make wise money decisions on pet care

I knew I was smitten the day I loaded up on squeaky toys, milk bones and sundry other doggie delights. Having never loved an animal before, no one was more surprised than I when my first granddog, Sir Boddington, nuzzled a place in my heart I didn't know existed. I blame it on “Boddie" that I so willingly became a member of the U.S. population who in 2005 spent $36 billion on food, supplies and medical care for their 358 million pets.Pets come with routine and unavoidable expenses. But that's a drop in the food dish compared to what you'll spend should you decide your pets deserve the latest and greatest medical treatments when they get injured or seriously ill. Even if your pet is perfectly healthy, vets are now ready with a battery of tests, shots and even X-rays for the annual wellness checkup " pushing the tab to $140 for kittens and puppies and as much as $340 for geriatric cats and dogs. There are steps you can take now to make sure you'll be able to afford to care for the pets you love " in sickness and in health.PREVENT: Whoever said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure must have owned a pet....

It's only been open for a few weeks, but the new Emergency Pet Center by Brooks City-Base has already saved the lives of some of its four-legged patients. South Side residents now have a place close to home to take seriously sick or injured pets at night, on weekends or during holidays — times Ruff or Kitty could very well get hit by a car, mauled in a fight or incapacitated by a chunk of Thanksgiving turkey lodged in the throat. Six dogs and a pet ball python named Chica joined about 40 people — South Side business leaders, pet owners and veterinary workers — at Wednesday's official grand opening. The center is at 3130 S.E. Military Drive, Suite 101 — at the northwest corner of the City Base Landing retail complex. San Antonio now has its fair share of after-hours emergency facilities for animals, including at least four across the North Side, said Dr....

Rat prevention: Do's and Don'ts

Taking steps to prevent rat infestation can go a long way. Here are some tips from the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services Vector Management Program for discouraging rats around the home. • Store garbage in rodent-proof containers, as far away as possible from the home. Receptacles should be rust-resistant, water-tight and have tight-fitting lids. • All fallen fruit and nuts should be regularly removed and discarded in the trash. Also pick up pet droppings. Prune fruit off trees wherever possible. • Store pet food in metal containers with tight-fitting lids. Don't leave pet food out overnight. Also, make sure pet doors are shut tight at night. • Rats love clutter, so keep outdoor areas tidy. Elevate stored items, salvageables and firewood 18 inches above ground and 12 inches away from walls and fences....

The Calgary Humane Society annual Cocktails for Critters held recently in the spectacular home of Ann McCaig proved the perfect opportunity for pet people to gather and raise funds for our beloved Humane Society. More than $50,000 was raised for the society's programs which include animal health and care, protection, violence prevention, humane education, and animal behaviour. That the society cared for more than 9,300 homeless animals in 2005 is reason alone to support this invaluable organization. And support was the order of the evening as guests bid furiously on auction items as diverse as a Cariboo Snowcat skiing tour and a Prada purse. Kudos to Cocktails for Critters committee members: Chair Deanna Steblyk; Patty Fraser; Nick Gnida; Jose Guillen; Jacqueline Lacasse; Katherine Lanovaz; Angus Mac-Kenzie; Tricia Russell; Debra Sawatzky; Krista Treasure; Holly Williams; and Roxanne Wong....
